LPC and CIT Supervision

Welcome LPC-Associates from Texas, LPC-Residents from Virginia, and CITs!

I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with LPC-Associates in Texas, LPC-Residents in Virginia, and CITs (Counselors in Training); to help enhance skills already learned, but to help them become competent, compassionate, and ethical professional counselors. There is such a need for mental health counselors in our country and my hope is that we can fulfill that need and help those that are in need of our expertise.

LPC and CIT Supervision

Supervision consists of discussing specific questions about individual cases, exploration of various theoretical perspectives, discovering interventions from an eclectic array of treatment modalities, in addition to gaining knowledge of LPC Board Rules and Code of Ethics for our profession. Examples of therapeutic modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Gestalt therapy, Reality Therapy, etc. I provide Supervision for LPC-Associates (Texas), LPC-Residents (Virginia), and CITs (Counselors in Training) with an emphasis on bringing continued credibility and reliability to the profession of Professional Counselors. Associates, Residents, and Students will be given the opportunity to meet weekly for individual (2 or less supervisees) and monthly for group (3 or more supervisees), as well as having opportunities to see clients in a private practice setting (on a very limited basis – Texas Associates and CITs ONLY).

As a Clinical Mental Health Supervisor, I play multiple roles in the supervisor relationship such as teacher, counselor, consultant, coach, and mentor/role model, which are described more fully below (Bernard & Goodyear, 2019; Borders & Brown, 2005).

  • Teacher: In the context of the supervisory relationship, my focus is on helping the supervisee develop their knowledge of the counseling skills they have learned in their graduate programs, as well as identification of strengths, growth areas, learning needs, encourage self-awareness, and sharing practical knowledge for professional growth.
  • Counselor: In the milieu of the supervisory relationship, I am NOT the supervisee’s counselor. My duty as supervisor is to assist the supervisee in managing personal issues/emotions that may interfere with their work with a client. I check in with my supervisees to encourage self-care, professional counseling (if needed), and management of caseload to avoid burn out.
  • Consultant: Supervisory consultation consists of identification and discussion of mutually agreed upon goals for the supervisee during the supervision experience. Additionally, case consultation and review of clients, exploration of alternative case conceptualizations, evaluation of performance (e.g., to address supervisee strengths and growth areas), assessment, and professional gatekeeping (i.e., adherence to the state and ACA Code of Ethics) are areas of focus for me in the role of consultant. .
  • Coach: This is my favorite role! As “coach” my job is to support you, the supervisee. I will cheer you on, encourage you, and help you to not go down the path of burn out. However, as the supervisor, I will also address any clinical growth areas for improvement, address concerns, and offer different perspectives. I want to build supervisees up rather than tear down.
  • Mentor/Role Model: Through my varied experiences in the counseling field, my role is to model and facilitate your professional development and professional identity as a mental health counselor.

Obtaining LPC-Associate or LPC-Resident Status

It’s very important to familiarize yourself with the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors website or the Virginia Board of Counseling website. From this website you can obtain information regarding the application process and forms needed for your state. As part of the supervision process, I can help you make sense of the application process and help to make it a little less overwhelming.

Supervision Structure

LPC Supervision consists of individual (2 or less Associates or Residents) and group (3 or more Associates or Residents) face to face meetings (via tele-supervision). According to the LPC Board rules for both Texas and Virginia, supervision is to take place one hour a week and no more than 50% of supervision can take place in a group setting. Supervision will be offered one hour a week for each Associate or Resident and a group supervision session will take place one time a month.

CIT Supervision has a similar structure to LPC Supervision; however, CIT Supervision includes a more educational environment as CITs are in the learning phase of their training. Hour requirements are set by each CIT’s program.

Please inquire for the supervision fee.
